Second annual Green Fair taking place this Sunday, Oct. 7

Those who attend can learn environmentally friendly practices and go on the new Art Walk featuring local artists

After its inception last year, the Voorhees Town Center will once again be home to Voorhees’ second annual Green Fair, taking place outside of the town center on Sunday, Oct 7 from noon to 3 p.m.

Much of the staples from last year will return to provide residents with the opportunity to learn more about environmentally friendly practices, as well as participate in the art walk.

The event is put on by Sustainable Voorhees, a committee of Voorhees Township and certificate recipient of Sustainable Jersey.

“It’s awareness-building,” said Marianne Leone, acting chair of the Sustainable Voorhees Green Team and chair of the Green Fair Planning Committee. “It’s an event for the community to see what sustainable practices are happening within the community and how they can make a difference.”

Exhibitors will be showcasing sustainable practices and helping residents create items with used materials, such as by making a bird feeder or using old t-shirts to create shopping bags that can be reused. Additionally, they will be collecting plastic bags at the event to be recycled.

Other activities include rock painting and face painting, as well as this year’s new big event in the Art Walk, where participants will take about a 20-minute walk visiting pieces of work from local artists. Donations from local businesses and residents have made for prizes for those who attend.

Earlier this year throughout the month of September and concluding on Tuesday, Oct. 2, Sustainable Voorhees and the Voorhees Arts Council provided a free movie series thanks to a partnership with the Camden County Branch Library at the M. Allan Vogelson Branch Library.

Through these movies, viewers learned about multiple components of environmental waste and current problems, such as water conservation, plastic bags, honeybees and more.

These movies helped further the message of how important the environment is and build steam leading up to the Green Fair this weekend.

“It starts with one,” said Leone. “We all can make a difference, with plastic bags or all our different behaviors. It’s very important and critical and that’s what people can learn.”

According to their website, Sustainable Voorhees is “committed to fostering a socially responsible citizenry, protecting the health of the environment, and building a strong local economy by collaborating with the residents, schools, businesses and government of Voorhees Townships to promote and implement sustainable practices.”
