Voorhees rallied for “Relay for Life”

Voorhees Mayor Michael Mignogna joined American Cancer Society staffers and volunteers for a rally to promote the Township’s first Annual Relay for Life last week at Town Hall in the Voorhees Town Center. The rally, a follow-up to last month’s Voorhees Relay For Life kick-off, drew attendees from Voorhees and surrounding towns including Berlin, Cherry Hill and Laurel Springs. One of a number of preliminary activities planned for the months leading up to the actual Relay in June, last night’s rally was aimed at bolstering support and “spreading the word” about this uplifting, inspiring event.

“The Rally for the Voorhees Relay For Life was so important,” said Jeanette Golden, Relay veteran and event Chair. “This is the first time we’re holding a Relay For Life here in Voorhees and I have faith that the community — families, businesses, schools and other organizations — will “put their best foot forward” and support us.”

Relay For Life is a life-changing experience that helps communities across the globe to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost — and to fight back against this devastating disease.

The actual Voorhees Relay For Life is slated for June 8th and 9th at Eastern High School in Voorhees. An overnight-style event, teams of people will camp out around the high school track and, for the duration, members of each team will take turns walking around the track. With food, games and a host of entertaining activities planned, the Voorhees Relay For Life promises to be a family-friendly affair full of fun and fundraising opportunities for participants, sponsors and spectators alike.

“Relay For Life is an inspirational experience…a time to celebrate life,” remarked Golden. “In addition to the fun, festive atmosphere, the event is marked by an extraordinary sense of hope, remembrance and resolve. Ultimately, we know we’re there for a purpose — to save lives.”

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising and awareness event. Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States, along with additional communities in 20 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer.

“There are many ways to support the Voorhees Relay For Life,” said Golden. “You or your organization can form a team, volunteer during the event, become a business sponsor, make a donation — or even serve as a part of the planning committee. Every little bit takes us even further toward our goal of finding a cure.”
