More than 400 photographs were submitted, but only best best 71 will be featured.
The Pinelands Preservation Alliance, a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to saving the Pinelands, is holding its juried photography exhibit at its headquarters on 17 Pemberton Road in nearby Southampton. The exhibit’s opening reception was this past Saturday, Nov. 4, but the photos will be on display until Dec. 10.
The PPA has held similar events before, but this time it hopes to make the event annual.
There is no charge to attend the event and no RSVP is required.
More than 400 photographs were submitted, but only the best 71 were selected, partially due to spatial concerns.
Images were judged by Bill Horin, the founder and creative director of ArtC, an organization that connects “a network of artists and other professionals engaged in artistic pursuits, making contact for mutual benefit.” Horin is also a professional photographer headquartered in Linwood and has been influential in promoting the arts in South Jersey for more than two decades. He is the creator and host of the weekly television show “ArtC with Bill Horin” every Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on SNJ Today/WMGM. Horin is also the director of the photography and video conference Photo SJ 2017.
Photographic images had to be taken within the boundaries of the Pinelands National Reserve and fit into one of six categories: landscape, flora, wildlife, people in nature, communities (includes architecture) or the open student category, the last of which is for students age 22 or younger.
“We believe we have a lot of fantastic images capturing the Pinelands from different people,” said Steve Sebastian, the PPA’s director of philanthropy. “We’re excited about it.”
The exhibit will take place in the PPA’s Louden Barn, which was renovated just last year.
“Part of it is trying to communicate the specialness of the New Jersey Pinelands,” Sebastian said. “I think a lot of people in South Jersey are aware of the Pinelands. They may have driven through it to get to the Shore, but they don’t truly appreciate it. You don’t discover the beauty simply by driving through it. But you can find some pretty powerful images of the place and what makes it special, and I think that ties in with our mission.”
Juried exhibit committee members include Albert Horner of Medford, Christopher Kosseff of Monroe Township, Richard Lewis of Medford, Cathy Melfi of Millsboro, Del., Charles Riter of Easton, Md., Penelope Taylor of Hamburg and Patricia Worley of Medford.
