The Tabernacle Board of Education has a vacancy to fill, and it’s looking for members of the community who are interested in the position.
The vacancy comes as a result of the resignation of board vice president Tina Marie Coolidge, who resigned from the board effective May 30.
At the board’s June 16 meeting, board member Geneva Moore was selected as the new vice president, but the position of regular board member as vacated by Coolidge remains.
Those interested in applying for the position are asked to send letters of their intent to district business administrator and board secretary Noreen Boston by July 8.
Anyone interested in serving on the board must be a United States Citizen, at least 18 years of age, possess the ability to read and write, and have lived in Tabernacle for at least one year. They also cannot be a disqualified voter and must be a registered voter.
Once the interested candidates have submitted their letters of intent, the board will then interview candidates during a special public meeting of the board on Thursday, July 17 at 6:30 p.m.
Board president Michael Lee said the interview process would help the board select the best candidate from those who applied.
“With the obvious candidates putting in their letter of interest, and it’s not that extensive, being able to read and write, being a resident for at least a year, registered voter…we want an outstanding candidate. In order to make that happen, what I’d like to do is I’d like it to be a full board interview of our candidates.”
The candidate selected to fill the vacancy will be sworn in at the board’s next regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, July 21.
The candidate selected to fill the vacancy will then serve the remainder of Coolidge’s term until July 1, 2015.
If the candidate selected is interested in serving on the board in any long-term capacity, he or she would still be required to submit the proper paperwork to the Burlington County Clerk’s office by July 28 to appear on the ballot in November to run against any other interested parties.
Superintendent George Rafferty said anyone selected to serve on the board could expect to have their board duties consist of about six to 10 hours a month.
“Sometimes they might average less than that, but sometimes other matters come up where you might put more time in,” Rafferty said.
The member would be expected to attend the board’s monthly public meeting, in addition to serving on one of the board’s education, human resources, operations or policy committees and attending a monthly meeting associated with that committee.
The superintendent also gives board members weekly updates, in addition to a packet in advance of each board meeting containing information about the meeting.
Rafferty said board members are also encouraged to attend to school functions and events to appear visible and connected to the school and community.
For those interested, letters of intent can be directed to district business administrator and board secretary Noreen Boston through mail at 132 New Road, Tabernacle, NJ 08088, through fax at (609) 268–1006 or through email to [email protected].
