Superintendent H. Major Poteat made the announcement at the Winslow Township Board of Education meeting.
At the most recent Winslow Township Board of Education meeting, Superintendent H. Major Poteat announced the Winslow Township School District has been added to The College Board’s seventh annual AP District Honor Roll. Poteat called this achievement, ‘”the most prestigious honor the district has received in his tenure, as well as the establishment of the Winslow Township School District.”
Winslow Township was one of 433 school districts in the United States and Canada to make the honor roll.
“Winslow Township School District has always strived to and has continued to offer Advanced Placement courses of the highest caliber,” he said. “These young people who take Advanced Placement courses at our high school are the very best classes we have to offer.”
Some of the AP classes the Winslow Township School District offers include U.S. History, World History, Physics 1 and 2, Chemistry and Spanish.
To be included in the honor roll, the school district had to increase the number of students participating in AP classes while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP exam scores of three or higher over a three-year period. The school district achieved this between 2014 and 2016.
“This shows the district has successfully identified and motivated academically prepared students who are ready for Advanced Placement,” Poteat said.
Another criteria the district had to meet was to increase or maintain the percentage of African-American, Hispanic, Latino, American-Indian and Alaskan-Native students taking exams and increase or maintain the percentage of those students who score three or more on at least one AP exam.
Poteat said seven or eight years ago, one of the concerns the school district had was not only being able to maintain the AP classes, but to make sure there was “representation of all students in those classes.”
“Over the years, we’ve continued to build upon those classes not only for the students, but to take the AP exams at the end of the class,” he said. “As a result of three years, our young people have scored at least a three or higher on the AP exams.”
To pass an AP exam at the end of a course, one must receive a three or higher.
