Seventeen students and two faculty members cut and donated their hair
Seneca High School’s National Honor Society hosted its Second Annual Pantene Beautiful Lengths event. Seventeen students and two faculty members cut their hair that will be used to help make wigs for patients who lost their hair battling cancer. Senior Samatha Derkas said, “For the longest time, I was afraid to cut my hair because I thought it was the only part of me that made me feminine and pretty. The idea of getting to give my hair to someone in need makes me happier than I could have been with long hair.” Senior Victoria Styers added, “I’ve always had long hair. Last year I heard about the donation, and I thought it was a great idea. I donated 15 inches thinking It’s just hair. It will grow back. I was hoping I’d have enough this year to donate again. I love my long hair, but the cause is so amazing. How can you not donate? I just feel so great being able to help out people and give back.”
Stylists from Salon 541 in Medford, NJ, graciously donated their time to help the cause. National Honor Society adviser and math teacher Maureen McMichael said, “Salon 541 donated their stylists to help with the cuts, and they are amazing. It’s our second year doing this. The event began when two students (Katelyn Dever, Class of 2017, and Kayla Dauria, Class of 2017) approached me last year asking if I would help them get it started. It’s wonderful to see our students helping others and supporting each other throughout the event. Each girl donated a minimum of 8 inches of hair. We will send it all to Pantene, and they will use it to make wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments.”
