Seneca High School springs into the season with upcoming events

Though the temperatures and seemingly constant layer of snow are no indication, spring is just around the proverbial corner and with that residents can look forward to variety of events to welcome the season.

Seneca High School will play host to nights of jazz, dodge ball and theater in the coming months beginning with the Seneca Eagles Band Parents Association annual “Jazz Festival” to be held on Wednesday, March 19 in the school’s auditorium from 4 to 9 p.m.

“It’s really an amazing night and a chance for parents, students and residents to enjoy an evening of wonderful music performed by middle and high school jazz ensembles from the area,” association member Judy Argentine said.

Admission is $8 for adults and students, $5 for seniors 65 and older. Refreshments and merchandise will also be available for purchase.

In perhaps a slightly different vein than jazz, Seneca’s community service club as well as INTERACT will hold its fourth annual dodge ball tournament on March 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. Teams of eight can register for $20 per person and spectators are invited to watch for $1. Proceeds of the event will be donated to charity.

If watching robots instead of students compete is more up your alley, then the MAR First Robotics Lenape Seneca District Competition should entertain. Students from Seneca and Shawnee High School make up one team while students from Lenape and Cherokee another.

Each student team has an electrical, mechanical and software sub team. The team also contains students to work on areas such as management, web design and photography. Teams also make presentations at the companies that sponsor them with the Seneca and Shawnee team presenting a critical design review at Lockheed Martin. Team members are permitted to work on their robots in the pit area between their matches and anyone in attendance can walk through this area to see the robots up close and interact with the teams.

In lieu of the school’s spring musical, “High School Musical,” which runs May 1 through May 3, the cast and crew of the musical are hosting a flea market on Saturday, April 5 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. in Seneca’s parking lot. Anyone from the area who is interested can sell unwanted goods.

“It’s a great time for you to begin that spring cleaning,” musical business director Amy Rominiecki said. “A food court will also be available for snack and refreshment purchases. We’re hoping the weather can hold out and we’ll have a good turnout.” To rent a space, visit the school’s website www.lrhsd.org

Also, the cast and crew of the musical are hosting a vendor, crafts and independent representatives fair on Wednesday, April 16 from 6 until 9 p.m.

“That’s an event we’re excited about and we’re working to have a number of vendors and customers attend,” Rominiecki said. “It is a great time to purchase Mother’s Day gifts.”
