Burlington Township school district looking toward the future

At the Wednesday, May 24, Board of Education meeting, the board discussed the students and programs that are enhancing the district.

The Wednesday evening Burlington Township Board of Education meeting was about looking toward the future, honoring students bound to have major accomplishments and programs that will enhance the district, while thanking the teachers who are departing.

During the pride students of the month presentations, a student from every grade level of Burlington Township schools was honored with flowers and the story behind their nomination. The reasons students were nominated were broad but held one common tie — these students are making an impact today and will continue to do so tomorrow.

Their acts of kindness ranged in size. Burlington Township High School junior Jacob Eddings was recognized for his book drive. He plans to donate the books to women’s shelters and charities in the near future. Third grader at Fountain Wood Elementary School Stanya Momplaisir, on the other hand, received the honor for helping a new student feel at home in her new school by speaking creole with the shy girl.

Denise P. King, principal of B. Bernice Young Elementary School, thanked Young School nurse Deborah Ford for her 25 years of service. She said Ford’s good humor will make her irreplaceable.

“Who here has gone to nurse Ford crying?” King said, jokingly raising her hand.

King praised Ford for her ability to stay calm during a crisis and instill that same sense of calm in those coming to her in need.

Following the student recognitions, the board continued its discussions of the future with board member Donna Custard discussing changes to the district’s facilities.

“Over the summer, we have several projects that will be undertaken,” Custard said.

Custard said the major undertaking will be construction to the high school’s cafeteria. She said the buildings and grounds committee is also looking into grants to provide more locks at the Fountain Woods school.

During her curriculum committee report, board member Susan Eichmann proposed adding a second level of the high school’s TV/Media Production course. She said the course has been overwhelmingly popular. She said this would allow interested students to continue their study.

“There’s been a lot of excitement about this course, and we’re really excited about that,” Eichmann said.

The next Board of Education meeting will be Wednesday, June 28 at 7 p.m.
