The Mt. Laurel Fire District is holding a special election today for a facilities maintenance bond.
The goal of the referendum is provide funds to make repairs to the fire district’s three buildings and ensure their reliability for the next 20 years.
The proposed bond is $2.95 million, which will be divided up between Masonville, Birchfield and Fellowship Fire Stations.
The 2014 budget reduced fire district taxes by $15.94 for the average assessed home of $236,952.
If the referendum is passed, the average household will see an annual increase of about $8.60 on their fire district taxes, meaning the average homeowner will stay pay less in taxes this year than what they paid in 2013.
Deputy Fire Chief Christopher Burnett said the fire district’s budget was reduced by about $500,000 this year to help allow room for the bond referendum without putting too much of a burden on the taxpayer.
Residents can vote starting at 2 p.m. at Birchfield Fire Station on Elbo Lane. Polls close at 9 p.m. tonight.
