Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice announces Mt. Laurel resident as vice-chair of board

Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice has announced new officers of the not-for-profit organization’s 18-member board of trustees. The new officers, elected to serve a one-year term, are: chair John C. Gillespie, Esq., vice-chair Jewelle Sutherland, MD, secretary Orsula Knowlton, PharmD, MBA, and treasurer Lee Shields, CPA. Immediate past chair Liz Thomas, of Thomas Boyd Communication, continues to serve on the Board.

The new officers take the helm during a historic year as the 36-year-old not-for-profit organization conducts its first capital campaign to raise funds for Southern New Jersey’s first freestanding hospice — named The Samaritan Center at Voorhees — expected to open in late 2016.

“We are grateful to benefit from the passion, dedication, expertise, and leadership these officers bring to the board during such a transformative year for our organization,” Samaritan president and CEO Mary Ann Boccolini said.

Vice-Chair Jewelle Sutherland, MD, a graduate of Temple University School of Medicine, is board certified in Pulmonology and Internal Medicine and practices at Virtua Garden State Pulmonary Associates. She resides in Mt. Laurel.

Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice is a not-for-profit, non-sectarian, independent organization accredited by The Joint Commission, a member of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO), and NHPCO’s We Honor Veterans program, created in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Samaritan is the regional leader for hospice care, palliative (comfort) medicine, grief support and counseling, and end-of-life education, and advocacy. Samaritan serves people in Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, and Mercer counties who are coping with the stresses of aging, serious illness or grief.
