Rowan College at Burlington County hosts film exploring FDR administration response to Jewish refugees during WWII

Rowan College at Burlington County’s (RCBC) Center for Social Justice and Holocaust Studies, in partnership with the Goodwin Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Cherry Hill, will host a free showing of “Complicit,” the untold story of why the Roosevelt Administration denied safe haven to Jewish refugees.

The event will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7 at in the Enterprise Center at RCBC.

The film explores Roosevelt’s response to the refugee ship S.S. St. Louis that left Hamburg, Germany, in May 1939 with over 900 Jewish refugees seeking safe passage out of Nazi-occupied Europe.

The ship was denied entry into the United States, and although four European countries would accept the majority of the passengers weeks later, most would die by the end of the war.

The hour-long film will be introduced by one of the few survivors of the S.S. St. Louis, Eva Wiener, of New Jersey, who will discuss her personal experiences aboard the ship. After the film, attendees will meet and speak with the film’s playwright and director, Robert Krakow.

The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available. Donations are welcomed and will be shared equally with both centers.

Students are especially encouraged to attend. Through RCBC’s partnership with Rowan University, students from both institutions have access to more cultural and campus life events that expose them to a broader array of perspectives.
