Rotary scholarship encouraging students to take a look into Moorestown’s past

The Moorestown Rotary Lunch club is offering students a new scholarship opportunity.

The Moorestown Rotary Lunch Club annually sponsors $25,000 in scholarships for Moorestown High School students. This year, Rotary member Lon Haines has created a new scholarship for Moorestown students.

Students in any grade from Moorestown High School or Moorestown Friends School are eligible for the $1,000. To be considered, the Rotary is asking students to write a five-page paper on any aspect of Moorestown history.

“My wife and I are big on history, genealogy and antiques. Also, Bill Kingston, as a high school history teacher, did a great job in getting my kids interested in Moorestown history,” Haines said. “Rotary has been giving scholarships for years, so it made sense to me to extend the two ideas into one.”

The papers will be reviewed by a committee of five people including members of the Rotary, the Moorestown Historical Society and other citizens of Moorestown with an interest in history. Suggested topics include Moorestown’s founding in the 1600s, families of note, historic homes and buildings, and notable local organizations and businesses.

Haines said Moorestown is host to some “very motivated” students.

“If they can put their efforts into something like this, it will generate an interest in the community, by them and others and to appreciate our history,” Haines said.

The funding for the scholarship will come from a variety of sources including Haines, the Rotary and some other individuals, he said.

The scholarship recipient will be announced on Flag Day on June 14 at the Moorestown Rotary meeting at the Community House.

Registration for the contest is required by April 1 with all paper due via email to Haines by May 25. For more information, visit www.moorestownrotary.org.
