Town hall demolition moving forward

By AUBRIE GEORGE

Plans to demolish the old town hall building at Second and Church streets are moving forward.

At Monday night’s meeting, Council awarded a contract to Ragan Design Group to put together bid specifications for the demolition of the building. The $12,600 contract requires the firm to prepare all documents and bid specifications so that contractors may bid on the project to demolish the fire-damaged building.

Officials decided to demolish the building after discussion with Ragan Design Group revealed that reuse the old structure under the project, designed by Kitchen & Associates and Greyhawk Construction, may have been the reason bids for that project came back millions over Council’s anticipated budget to construct a new town hall.

After last week’s meeting, Richard Ragan, president of Ragan Design Group, said the firm hoped to have the bid documents prepared within the next three weeks.
