Home Economists Celebrate 50 years

Fifty years ago, six home economists gathered in what was know as Levittown, N.J. to organize the two county chapter of home economists of the New Jersey Home Economics Association. The women established a chapter composed mainly of undergraduate and graduate degree home economists who were homemakers.

One of the first organizers was Florence Heal, chair of the Home Economics Dept of the Moorestown Public School. Today the President of the organization is Merry Greene who teaches at William Allen Middle School. Member Barbara Amon teaches at the Moorestown High School.

Today, the group known as the Family and Consumer Sciences / Home Economics Professionals of South Jersey ( FCSHEPSJ) meets on a regular basis for the purpose of professional improvement. Members are active in the many fields of family and consumer sciences or home economics or have retired as well as actively involved in the community.

Despite the evident need for education in food and nutrition, family relationship, and personal finance, which is all taught in the family and consumer sciences curriculum, many of the programs have been eradicated in many school districts in the state. There are strong educational programs both in school districts as well as community education programs in the two county area, such including the Moorestown school district.

All former members and those who have bachelor or advanced degree with a major in the field from an accredited college or university are invited to the join the professional association for the celebration of fifty years empowering individuals and families to manage the challenges of living and working is a diverse society.
