The Moorestown Youth Baseball Federation (MYBF) is hosting its annual poker night on Saturday, Feb. 9. The money raised will benefit the organization.
“Last year, we pulled in $13,000 for poker night,” MYBF President Dan Gannon said, adding this year the organization is hoping to raise $25,000.
Proceeds from the event will go toward improvements and upkeep of 11 fields around Moorestown, equipment, uniforms, accessories and other expenses necessary to fund baseball for the season. A $2,500 scholarship, the Anthony Muir Scholarship, is also presented to a high school senior who was a member of MYBF.
But Gannon said a majority of the funds are needed for field improvements.
“Our biggest expense are the fields,” he said, adding the organization is looking to install dugouts on the baseball field at Pryor Park.
With approximately 800 members ranging from ages 4 to 15, the biggest part of the park improvements and upkeep is safety. If needed, the money could go toward filling in any divots in the field, repairing holes in the fencing and more.
“The biggest thing is always safety,” he said.
The poker player limit is 150. Winners will receive a cash prize, and a seat in the Parx Casino BigStax series with a buy in of $550.
If you don’t feel like testing your luck on a poker game, there are other activities at the event. The fundraiser includes a silent auction, food and drinks, music and wine tasting.
Volunteer and mother of a MYBF player Susan Schmoll said the wine tasting is a $10 blind taste test with three red wines and three white wines. The wine types are nothing fancy, she said, adding the wines types are moderate, high and bargain basement. If you guess five of the wine types correctly, you get $5 back, she said.
With the food, drinks and gambling set aside, a special guest will be at the event.
Former Eagles All-Pro and current St. Louis Rams safety Quintin Mikell will make a special appearance at the event to sign autographs.
“It’s a great night. It’s a lot of fun and you don’t have to play poker. Just come out and support the cause,” he said.
For those wishing to play poker, ticket prices are $150. The ticket price for non-poker players is $35. Both ticket prices include food and beverage. Tickets can be preordered online by visiting www.moorestownbaseball.org or purchased at the door.

MYBF spring registration is now open until Jan. 31. Those who register before Jan. 31 will receive a free 30-minute individual lesson at the All-Star Baseball Academy. Members can choose between hitting, pitching or fielding and must schedule before Feb. 7.
