First female mayor in Moorestown

Moorestown’s reorganization meeting made history. Councilwoman Stacey F. Jordan was named Moorestown’s mayor on Monday, Jan. 7. Jordan is the first female mayor in Moorestown.

Sen. Diane Allen, Moorestown native and former New Jersey Network reporter, swore Jordan in as mayor.

Jordan was honored Allen was at the meeting.

When Jordan was in high school, she worked for a florist. One day, Allen walked into the shop. At the time, Allen worked as a reporter, and Jordan could not believe who walked through the door, she said.

“To have you swear me in is a great privilege and honor,” Jordan said to Allen who was sitting in the front row at the meeting.

Greg Newcomer, Victoria Napolitano and Phil Garwood were also sworn onto council last night. Councilman Chris Chiacchio was nominated as deputy mayor.

“I am honored and excited to be serving as the deputy mayor,” Chiacchio said. “I take it very seriously.”

He said he is looking forward to an exciting year.

Sen. Allen also swore in Chiacchio. Assemblyman Troy Singleton swore in Newcomer while Congressman Jon Runyan swore Napolitano and Garwood onto council.

Napolitano along with Garwood and lone Democrat Newcomer expressed thanks to the voters saying they hope to standup to the expectations of the voters.

“I am proud to be serving with everyone up here. I am humbled by the faith the voters put in me,” Napolitano said.

“I am enthusiastic about our future and our town’s future,” Newcomer said.

But when it comes down to the job at hand, Jordan said gender or party should not influence her job.

“I don’t see the mayor’s job suited for a man or a woman,” she said adding that the most qualified individual is selected for the job.

Working with other members of council Jordan said her position as mayor is more of a figurehead position. She plans to work with the other members of the council as a team.

“This is not a council of ‘Ds’ and ‘Rs,’ but a council that wants what is best for Moorestown,” she said.

Napolitano was appointed to the Open Space Advisory Committee and as the liaison for Telecommunications and Technology Committee.

Newcomer was appointed as council liaison on the Appearance Committee and Garwood was appointed as liaison on the Recreation Advisory Committee.

Anthony Drollas was selected as the new township solicitor.
