Arbor Day celebration set for April 25

Arbor Day celebration set for AprilĀ 25

As the saying goes, April showers bring May flowers. What most people do not know is that April also brings a community-wide Arbor Day celebration for all Moorestown residents.

On Friday, April 25, outdoorsmen and women of all kinds who are wishing to welcome spring by honoring trees, plants and all of Mother Natureā€™s little glories of the season should visit Wesley Bishop Park on North Church Street at 10Ā a.m.

After its 60th Jubilee Anniversary earlier this year, the main sponsor of the Arbor Day event will be the Moorestown GardenĀ Club.

Sandy Daniels, the club co-chair of Arbor Day in Moorestown, explained that this ceremony is an informative annual event that promotes tree planting.

ā€œWe hope to get as many people as possible to come,ā€ DanielsĀ said.

Last year, the newly created Moorestown Jewish Association highlighted the event. The association donated a strong and beautiful River Birch tree. The association will also be present at this yearā€™sĀ event.

ā€œBecause Israel has an Arbor Day around the same time we do, they wanted to celebrate at the same timeĀ ā€¦ they wanted to do something for the community, and planting a tree is always a positive thing,ā€ DanielsĀ said.

Other than the Moorestown Garden Club and Jewish Association, sponsors for this yearā€™s event include the Moorestown Improvement Association, the Tree Planting and Preservation Committee and the Township of Moorestown. Representatives from all organizations will be in attendance.

The event will be capped off by Flaggs Garden Center and Nursery planting a tree. As a local business situated on Bridgeboro Road, Daniels explained that Flaggs is extremely supportive of the Arbor Day festivities.

ā€œThey are donating the tree this year, and we are very grateful,ā€ DanielsĀ said.

The state Department of Environmental Protectionā€™s ā€œTree City USAā€ program will be recognizing Moorestown at the event as well. The Tree City program gives towns credit for excellence in forestry, tree and park management.

ā€œThe ā€˜Tree Cityā€™ Award has been given from the state to the township, and the township to the Arbor Day Committee,ā€ Daniels explained.

Daniels on behalf of the club wanted to remind everyone planning on attending the event to not be afraid of not having somewhere to park cars orĀ bikes.

ā€œThereā€™s plenty of parking for everyone to come by,ā€ Daniels said, highlighting that there are plenty of available spaces by the park concession stand.

To get involved with future events, the garden club encourages visitors at its meetings, which are held on the third Tuesday in the months of October, November, February, March and April. Meetings begin at 10 a.m. at the Moorestown Community House on 16 E. Main St. For more information about Arbor Day or the club, please visit www.moorestowngardenclub.com.
