Harry Douglas Lewis Jr. of Moorestown passed away on Sept. 29 at the age of 78.
Doug was born and raised in Riverside graduating from Riverside High, class of 1953. He was a graduate of the American Academy of Funeral Service in New York, class of ’57, and served his apprenticeship at the Foster Funeral Home in Collingswood from 1953 to 1956. Doug had been the owner of the Lewis Funeral Home in Moorestown, which he purchased in 1964 until his retirement in 2008, as well Lewis Funeral Home, in Medford from October 1980 until December 1993.
He was a member for over 55 years of the NJ State Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors Association and the Burlington County Funeral Director’s Association serving as president 1965 to 1966. He was the former board member of the Burlington County Trust Cooperation from 1975 to 1985; past president of the Salvation Army Unit in Moorestown; past president and member of the Moorestown Y’s Men’s Club; past president of Burlington County YMCA from 1978 to 1982; former trustee of Drenk Guidance Center; past president of Moorestown United Fund; past chairman and co-founder of the Moorestown Antique Show; past president of the development of YMCA Camp Worth; served on the Moorestown Welfare Board from 1971 to 1991; charter member of the Moorestown Rotary Breakfast Club; former member of the Moorestown Lunch Rotary Club & Moorestown Business Association; member of Medford Lodge # 178 F. & AM; former member of the Riverside Lodge # 187; longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Moorestown and Former Lay Reader; former member of the Burlington County YMCA Board of Trustees of 1964 and the YMCA Foundation Board of 1988; part of the Burlington County College Foundation from 1986 to 1993; longtime member of the Moorestown Inter Service Club Council Committee; and member of the Bull Pen Lunch Club. He also received the Moorestown Citizen of the Year Award in 1981.
Doug was the husband of the late Suzanne (nee Fleming); father of David D. (Susan) Lewis of Moorestown and Suzanne Lewis and her husband Eric Lee of Germantown; brother of Corinne (Reiss) Tiffany of Cinnaminson and William D. (Anne) Lewis of Easley, S.C.; and grandfather of Harry and Charlotte.
The viewing was held on Friday, Oct. 3 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Lewis Funeral Home located on 78 East Main Street from Moorestown. The funeral services were on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church located at Camden and Pleasant Valley Avenue in Moorestown. Interment is at the Mt. Laurel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please make contributions to The First united Methodist Church or the YMCA in Doug’s name.
