The Department of Parks and Rec Column and Schedule

While the wind is howling and the temperatures make us long for summertime, the Department of Parks & Recreation is already preparing for the Summer Parks Program, Summer Theater, Four Is Fun and more! This means teens, young adults and those seeking summer employment should call the department.

Each year, the Department of Parks & Recreation provides a full slate of summer activities to keep youth active, engaged and safe. As a part of the summer programs the department hires a highly qualified staff, from Site Supervisors to CITs to provide a full complement of activities. For those individuals seeking employment, applications are available at the Department of Parks & Recreation offices on the second floor of the Church Street recreation building. Applications may be picked up in person or requests to have them mailed can be made by contacting the recreation offices. Individuals wishing to be considered for the Recreation CIT program can obtain an application in person at the department offices.

The Department of Parks & Recreation CIT Program is a long-standing, jobs training program that offers youth ages 13–15 to train to become Camp Counselors. This highly competitive program has evolved into a formal job training program that includes interview practice, job responsibility, offers CPR training, as well as exit interviews and reviews. This formalized program allows young people to prepare for real world jobs and helps them to improve and build their work-force skills. This jobs training program also serves as a feeder program for the department, allowing qualified and trained individuals an opportunity to apply for paid summer employment. CIT positions are available for Summer Theater, Summer Parks, Summer Sports Camps Summer arts classes and other programs. The goal of the department is to adequately train young teens for future employment whether with the department or elsewhere. Providing young people with opportunities for responsibility and personal growth is a primary goal of the department, preparing young people for their futures.

Those seeking employment (paid or volunteer) should contact the Department of Parks & Recreation at 111 West Second Street (Municipal Complex), Church Street Recreation Center. Applications are currently available and are due by March 20. Applications received between March 20 and 31 will be automatically wait-listed. Those applications received after March 31 will not be accepted. Beginning in 2015, CITs applicants who are accepted will pay a $50 registration fee. For questions about applications please contact the Department of Parks & Recreation at (856) 914–3093.
