Obituary: Loyd Barrentine

A visitation will take place on Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Lewis Funeral Home.

Loyd Barrentine of Mt. Laurel, formerly of Moorestown, passed away peacefully on Jan.11 at the age of 89.

He was the beloved husband of Bonnie (nee Cahill). Loyd was also the devoted father of Judy Jordan; Kathy McKinley and husband Gary and Jim Barrentine and wife Lori Torrini. He is survived by brother, Wayne Barrentine and sister, Beverly Crow, both of New Mexico. Loyd was the loving grandfather of eight grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Loyd was born in 1929 in Cleveland, Miss. and moved to California in his teens. Upon high school graduation in 1947, he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in “MacArthur’s Guard” under General Mathew Ridgeway. After leaving service for a brief period in law enforcement, in Inglewood, Calif., Loyd re-entered the army as an officer in the Military Police retiring as major in the army. In 1971, he became Moorestown’s director of police and then became an investigator for the Department of Defense.

In retirement, Loyd was an active leader in community affairs and civic organizations in Moorestown and Mount Laurel. He was a member of Lions Club International, Y’s Service Club of Moorestown, Military Officers Association of America (Joint Base McGuire-Dix Lakehurst) and Board Member for the Birchfield Community Homeowners Association.

A mass of Christian burial will take place at 11 am. on Thursday, Jan. 17, at St. John Neumann Church located at: 560 Walton Ave, Mt Laurel, NJ 08054. A visitation will take place on Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Lewis Funeral Home located at 78 E. Main Street in Moorestown. A private interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
