The Moorestown Township Council on June 8 authorized $80,000 from the Moorestown Open Space Recreation, Farmland and Historic Preservation Trust Fund to be used for environmental improvements at Strawbridge Lake.
“This is in regard to the work that was recommended by Princeton Hydro after their extensive review of the condition of the lake that Chet Dawson filled us in on a couple weeks ago,” Township Manager Scott Carew said.
Dawson, chair of the Environmental Advisory Committee, met with Carew regarding Strawbridge Lake and the improvements that should be made, leading to a presentation at the April 27 council meeting. At that meeting, he gave a presentation on the condition of Strawbridge Lake and the recommendations the Environmental Advisory Committee and Princeton Hydro had for the lake.
The Environmental Advisory Committee would like to take out the spatterdocks, start educating the public, remove the algae, do a fish study and study what is encroaching on the lake. It also would like to take a look at the three sediment tanks and four rain guards to see what condition they are in. And finally, the Environmental Advisory Committee would like to do chemical and physical testing on the lake.
From this presentation and the proposal made by Princeton Hydro on May 29, the council was asked to approve $80,000 from the Moorestown Open Space Recreation, Farmland and Historic Preservation Trust Fund to be used for the environmental improvements at Strawbridge Lake.
Council unanimously approved the resolution.
In other news:
• Carew gave an update on where the township is with the Lenola Jeff Young Hockey Rink. He believes with the rink at Wesley Bishop Park being reconstructed, the dasher board from there could be used at the Jeff Young rink, saving the township money and still keeping the use of it for residents. According to Carew, there is still a lot of investigation to do with pricing and if it would work from an engineering standpoint, but he wanted to run it by council and the possibility of creating a group on this project. Council members approved the idea and said to keep them updated.
• Lois F. Downey was reappointed for a three-year term as a municipal judge.
• Sophomores Anna Buss and Christopher Folgia were named as additional members to the Recreation Advisory Committee.
• The next Township Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 22 at 7:30 p.m. with a 7 p.m. workshop at Town Hall.
