OLGC student wins national youth essay competition

Sixth grade student Jamie Dunn has been named first-place district winner of the Patriot’s Pen national youth essay competition.

Jamie Dunn, a Mount Laurel resident and sixth-grade student at Our Lady of Good Counsel school in Moorestown, has been named first-place district winner of the Patriot’s Pen national youth essay competition. Dunn will be honored at a State Awards luncheon in Manville on Saturday, Feb. 9 and will compete with winners from 18 districts around the state for the chance to represent the state of New Jersey in the national competition. The contest is open to students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades.

The Patriots Pen contest consists of four levels of competition. The first level is sponsored by local VFW posts, who submit one winner for every 15 entries to compete at the District (regional) level where one first-place winner is advanced to the VFW Department (state) level. The first place winner at the Department level is then advanced to the national level to compete for prizes and scholarships. This year’s topic was “Why I Honor the American Flag.” Last year more than 120,000 students participated in the contest.
