A total of 34 students were evaluated by EMS officials
The following information has been provided by Medford Township Police Department:
On May 16, the Medford Township Police School Resource Officer was notified by school officials at the Burlington County Institute of Technology of an odor in the cafeteria causing students to feel ill effects. Additional Police, Fire and EMS crews were dispatched to the school. It was quickly determined that a student discharged a small pepper spray canister in the lunch room.
A total of 34 students were evaluated by EMS officials on scene for a variety of minor injuries ranging from teary eyes to coughing and vomiting. A total of 26 students were transported to the hospital for evaluation. 25 students were taken to Virtua Hospital in Mt. Holly and one student was taken to Virtua Hospital in Voorhees. Seven of the students were taken by ambulance and 19 students were taken by bus with EMS officials on board.
Medford Township EMS, Lumberton Township EMS, Tabernacle EMS, Mt. Laurel EMS, and Virtua paramedics assisted in the treatment and transport of the students.
The incident remains under investigation by the Medford Township Police Department in conjunction with the Burlington County Institute of Technology.
