“Ataraxia,” a classical concert piece composed by Medford resident Dr. Anthony Femiano, will be premiered by the Independent Sinfonia at its annual Medford concert on May 19.
“Ataraxia,” meaning peace or serenity in Greek, was written for Femiano’s daughter, an excellent oboe player, and her high school orchestra. Tony Femiano is an active performer, educator, arranger and composer whose works and arrangements have been performed by college, community and high school bands and orchestras. Tony currently serves as clinician and adjudicator for concert and jazz band festivals throughout the tri-state area.
Other pieces on the Independence Sinfonia’s program are Mozart’s “Overture to the Magic Flute,” and Beethoven’s “Symphony №5 in C minor, Opus 67,” both perennial favorites.
The Sinfonia, a 40-piece professional chamber orchestra, is appearing in Medford for the fifth year. Trombonist Jim Wehner, a Medford resident, will be the principal trombonist in the two traditional classical works. The concert will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 1 Hartford Road, Medford, starting at 6 p.m. Admission is $10.
