Popular singer-guitarist Charlie Zahm returns to Medford, New Jersey on Saturday, July 11 to present a tribute to John Denver and other acoustical musicians of the 1960s. Fiddler Tad Marks who often joins Charlie to create a memorable duo will accompany him. The concert starts at 7 p.m. at the Medford Friends Meetinghouse, 14 Union Street in Medford Village. Admission is $12 per person at the door and reservations are not required. Refreshments will be available during the break and Charlie will have CDs for sale.
The concert benefits the Medford Historical Society’s Dr. James Still Education Center, located at 211 Church Road. Dr. James Still (1812–1885), was a renowned herbalist and homeopathic healer often called “The Black Doctor of the Pines.” He was born to former slaves Levin and Charity Still at Indian Mills, New Jersey and resided in Burlington County most of his life. Born into poverty and mostly self-educated, James Still became one of the wealthiest men in Burlington County and owned land along Church Road in Medford.
In 2006 the state of New Jersey purchased Dr. Still’s office and the Bunning Farm next to the Still property. Volunteers restored the farmhouse and today it serves as the Dr. James Still Education Center, providing field trips of schools, workshops for adults, programs for families and special events, the Education Center teaches about the Still family, Medford history and the herbs Dr. Still used in his medicinal formulas. The Medford Historical Society operates the site under an agreement with the state.
