St. Mary of the Lakes School in Medford, NJ sent an unprecedented five teams to the Burlington County CYO Basketball Championships. Three of the teams (Varsity Boys, Varsity Girls and JV Boys) walked away with the title of “champion.”
The Burlington County CYO Championships were held at Holy Cross Academy in Delran. The highly anticipated event was well attended by SML fans. Many parents, teachers and students came out to support the teams. Former Pastor of St. Mary of the Lakes Parish and Principal of Holy Cross, Monsignor James Dubell, was in attendance, in addition to the school’s principal, Nina Hoover. The SML Athletic Association even provided a “hospitality suite” stocked with food, snacks, and drinks for the students to enjoy between games. Everyone had a great time and the school spirit was overwhelming.
SML Varsity Girls took a 19–16 lead at half and ran away in the second half to defeat rival OLGC 37–20 to win the BC CYO championship game. Congratulations to coaches Terry Cloud, Matt Cloud and the girls on a great win and fabulous season.
Varsity Boys blew open a close game with the red hot shooting of Johnny Kennevan to defeat St. Mary’s Bordentown and win the BC CYO championship 66–46. Congratulations to Coach Malady, Coach Peterson and the boys on a great win and season.
Hats off to the JV Boys on its second consecutive BC CYO Championship 31–22 over St. Mary’s Bordentown. SML successfully defended its JVBL title, having won three out of the last four championships. Congratulations Coach Simons, Coach Fish and to the boys for a great season.
Also, cheers to Johnny Kennevan (Varsity Boys), Matt Fish (JV Boys), and Rory Rensel (Varsity Girls) for being named playoff MVPs.
