Everyone knows the saying, “baseball is America’s pastime,” but how has the sport helped the assimilation of immigrants to the United States? Explore this topic with Dr. Stanton Green in a workshop titled “Becoming American: Baseball’s Place in the Assimilation of Immigrants” being held on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 11 a.m. to noon at the theater at Medford Leas located at One Medford Leas Way.
Green will share a multimedia tour of baseball parks, from rural lots to multi-million dollar stadiums, and examine the complex relationship baseball has with American culture, the role baseball has played in assimilating waves of immigrants to the United States, and the places and landscapes in which it is played. Learn why the ballpark is such an important part of American culture.
This lecture is being offered at no cost. Registration is not required. Green is a Professor of Anthropology at Monmouth University. This program is funded by the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
