Twinning Association open meeting

The Evesham, N.J., Twinning Association will hold an Open Forum meeting on Monday, March 11 at the Gibson House on Main Street in Marlton.

The session will start at 7 p.m. and there is no charge to attend.

This regular monthly meeting of the international friendship organization that oversees the “twin town” relationship between Evesham Township and City of Evesham in England will feature updates on two upcoming events:

The ETA’s annual Spring Fundraiser, scheduled for Friday, April 26 at Evesham’s Indian Spring Country Club, and this September’s visit to Burlington County by members of the Dreux, France, Twinning Association.

“Our periodic Open Forum meetings are a great opportunity for local residents to learn about twinning in general and our association in particular,” said ETA President Lynne Royek. “We’re always looking for new members to help us build an even-stronger relationship between our local community and our friends in England and France.”

While most ETA monthly meetings are in member’s homes, this March 11 session is being held at a larger, more accessible location to encourage prospective new members to attend. Membership in the ETA is open to residents of any municipality.
Twinning originated in Europe following World War II as a means to bring people from different countries together. The idea was that individual friendships would develop and lead to greater understanding and tolerance of one another’s cultures. Twinning is rare in the U.S., but it is quite common in Europe.

The Evesham Twinning Association was created in 1989 after an Evesham, N.J., municipal tax bill mysteriously ended up in Evesham, England.

The ETA also maintains a Friendship Link with the town of Dreux, France.

Twinning members from all three towns visit and live with each other every three years or so. The ETA also awards an annual college scholarship to a local matriculating high school student.

For more information about the Open Forum, or how to join the ETA, please contact the association’s publicity chair, Steve Royek, at (856) 906–4755 or at [email protected].
