South Jersey Pops to present concert for Marlton United Methodist Church Sept. 29

The South Jersey Pops will present a special concert for the Marlton United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 29, in the church at 2 Marlborough Avenue. Tickets are $8. Children of middle-school age and younger admitted free. All proceeds benefit the church, which hosts the rehearsal venue for the orchestra.

With conductor and music director Robert Schiavinato on the podium, the Pops will perform audience favorites from recent seasons. Included will be Brahms’ Hungarian Dances 5 and 6, Glière’s “Russian Sailors’ Dance,” selections from “Phantom of the Opera” and “Satchmo,” a tribute to Louis Armstrong. An encore performance of “Concerto №1,” composed by Pops’ bassist Thomas Michel of Cherry Hill, is also programmed. Michel, now a freshman at Drexel University, is the son of Pops’ oboist Charles Michel and the grandson of Pops’ bassist Allan Michel.

The special concert is one of four the Pops has scheduled for its 2014–2015 season. The season formally opens with the Pops’ Holiday Concert on Sunday, Dec. 14, at Lenape High School in Medford. The holiday performance will be followed by concerts on March 8 and May 17. The venue for those concerts has yet to be confirmed. A money-saving season subscription for all three concerts is $20. For $26, the Marlton concert can be included in the subscription package. Individual tickets and season subscriptions can be purchased online at www.southjerseypops.org. Tickets for all concerts, including the Marlton concert, are also available at the door.

Funding for the South Jersey Pops is provided in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a partner agency of the National Endowment of the Arts, through a grant from the Burlington County Board of Chosen freeholders.
