Local golf tournament raises money for diabetes research

The JDRF South Jersey Chapter “Fore The Kids” Golf Classic was held on Monday, June 27 at Tavistock Country Club, hosting 120 golfers under the leadership of co-chairs Tom Deeney and Michael Block.

The event raised more than $94,000 toward funding research efforts for a cure for diabetes. The South Jersey Chapter Youth Ambassadors, children between the ages of four and 17, all with type 1 diabetes, were on-site for the day to help with the festivities.

The winning foursome of JR Quinn, Chuck Barry, Frank Tiano and John Horton took home the new ‘Castro Cup,’ named after Richard Castro, one of the founders of the South Jersey golf tournament 26 years ago.

Among the day’s excitement were cars at various holes from Burns Honda and Lexus of Cherry Hill. No golfer got a hole-in-one, so; therefore nobody drove home in a new car.

During the dinner reception, the chapter’s annual “Athlete Awards” were presented to Robert O’Brien, Jr. and Courtney Patterson for excelling in school, sports, and activities while managing their diabetes.

“We are appreciative of all of our corporate participation in this event,” said Deeney. “The continuous commitment of companies such as Wawa and Ametek enable us to continue funding the most cutting edge research to find a cure for diabetes.”

Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.5 billion to diabetes research, including more than $107 million in 2010. More than 80 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and research-related education.

The 2011 “Fore the Kids” Golf Committee co-chairs Tom Deeney and Michael Block begin the evening program, which included the awarding of the Castro Cup.
