Grammy Award winning composer, Julie Gold, the writer of Bette Midler’s hit song “From a Distance”, will come to Cherry Hill and perform in concert at Congregation M’kor Shalom on Sunday, April 19 at 7 p.m. This program is underwritten by the Helen and Leon Weinberg Scholar-in-Residence Endowment Fund and is only $10 a ticket.
In a concert titled “Julie Gold: Sharing Songs and Stories”, Gold presents a musical journey through her life in music and words. While she’s a New York City resident, she has many stories that reflect her roots in the Delaware Valley. A Philadelphia area native, she has longtime friends at M’kor Shalom, including Cantor Anita Hochman whom she met at Camp Harlem summer camp. Not only does she have friends and family still living in Philadelphia and South Jersey, her beloved piano teacher, Rae Goldberg lives in Voorhees in Lions Gate Retirement Community. She credits Goldberg often and says that she is “by my side every time I sit at a piano.”
Julie Gold is best known for the huge popularity of Bette Midler’s version of her song, “From a Distance,” which won her the Grammy for Song of the Year in 1991. That song has since received close to four million air plays and has been given many honors, including being recited in the Congressional Record by Senator Barbara Boxer.
