The police department posted on social media this week that they are continuing to receive reports from residents about calls from individuals saying they are from the IRS and telling the residents they owe money.
Cherry Hill Police are issuing another warning to township residents to beware of the IRS phone scam.
Cherry Hill Police announced on their Facebook page Wednesday afternoon they are still receiving reports of individuals receiving phone class from someone claiming to be an IRS agent. According to police, the calls come from a number appearing to be from the IRS. The scammer on the phone tells the individuals they own money to the IRS as a result of an audit and a warrant will be issued if the debt is not repaid. The individuals are than asked to transfer money in to a bank account or provide gift card numbers of the phone.
The Cherry Hill Police Department is still taking reports in which individuals are scammed over the phone into paying money to someone claiming to be an IRS agent. The call comes from a spoofed number that looks like an IRS phone number. The person on the phone says a debt is owed to the IRS as a result of an audit and a warrant will be issued for your arrest if you do not pay it. The person then gives directions to transfer money into a bank account to resolve the issue or provide gift card numbers over the phone.
Cherry Hill Police have issued the following tips for what resident should do if an IRS scammer calls on the phone.
The Cherry Hill Police Department encourages everyone to follow the scam prevention tips from the IRS.gov website below:
- Do not give out any information. Hang up immediately.
- Contact TIGTA to report the call. Use their “IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting” web page or call (800) 366–4484.
- Report it to the Federal Trade Commission. Use the “FTC Complaint Assistant” on FTC.gov. Please add “IRS Telephone Scam” in the notes.
- If you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS directly at (1–800) 829–1040.
