Township police prepare for their version of National Night Out
National Night Out is fast approaching. Following the successful 2022 event, Delran will do it again on Tuesday.
The event – a local version of the nationwide National Night Out, will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. and will include live music, fireworks, food, a ferris wheel and activities. Its main purpose is for the community to meet and get to know members of the township fire, police and sheriff’s departments, as well as the township green team.
“Last year was a very big success,” said Council President Tyler Burrell. “We’re sticking to all the basics. It’s been a great event for the township. Everyone loves it.”
National Night Out is an annual event that began nationwide nearly four decades ago to promote police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie, as well as make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.
Among the highlights of last year’s Delran Night Out was a performance from the band Don’t Call Me Francis, one of the most requested groups in the Delaware Valley for its nearly three decades. They will get started at 7:30 p.m. this year.
“They brought in a massive crowd last year,” Burrell recalled. “We heard a lot of great things from people about them … We’re looking forward to having them back.”
The township’s Night Out evolved from a number of previous events – most notably Delran Day – and came to be in 2018.
“The first time you do anything, there’s a learning curve on the planning side for everyone involved,” Burrell noted. “The good thing about it now is that every year, we’re constantly improving. Everyone knows the playbook, everyone knows what needs to get done, so we can really focus our efforts on improving the event and getting more people out.”
Burrell estimated that roughly 4,000 to 5,000 people were in attendance at last year’s Night Out.
“It’s on a Tuesday in August,” Burrell pointed out. “Come out after work. Bring friends, family – whoever you’ve got. It’s an opportunity to get together, enjoy your neighbors, turn everything off for a little bit and just hang out, listen to some music and have some fun.”
