Members of Apocryphal Shakespeare rehearse for their performance of King Leir to take place Sunday, March 19. (Special to The Sun)

In conjunction with the Mabel Kay Senior Center and the Haddonfield Public Library, the Apocryphal Shakespeare Company proudly presents a dramatic staged reading of The Chronicle History of King Leir and his Three Daughters, by anonymous, unknown and forgotten; attributed to William Shakespeare, Thomas Kyd, Robert Green, George Peele, Thomas Lodge, Anthony Munday and others.

The show will take place on Sunday, March 19 at 2 p.m. at Mabel Kay Senior Center, 24 Walnut St. Haddonfield.

Doors will open at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free, but reservations are recommended.

The story of King Leir is part of the romantic Trojan progenitor myth that Geoffrey of Monmouth turned into British history in his Historia Regnum Britanniae. Brutus, the great-grandson of Aeneas (Prince of Troy), becomes the founder of Britain and Troynovant (London) and his descendants include Locrine, Leir, Gorboduc, and eventually Uther
Pandragon and King Arthur himself. The actual kings and queens of England were so flattered by this myth that it was upheld as historic fact until the time of Cromwell and the Commonwealth. A number of Early Modern plays were written about these kings and they were quite popular.
