Mi Wha Lee passed away peacefully on May 10. She was born in Seoul, South Korea on Jan. 15, 1940 as the first child of 7 siblings by the late Dr. and Mrs. Hakjin and Kehsook Hong.
She graduated medical school from Ewha Women’s University, Seoul, South Korea, Class of 1964. She immigrated to the U.S with her newly married husband, Bong S. Lee, M.D. in 1964. She had postgraduate training in pediatrics at the Philadelphia General Hospital and The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She worked at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia early in her career, then became a school physician with the Educational Board of Philadelphia for many years until her retirement in 2007. She was instrumental in a number of reforms for the health system of children’s care in schools.
As a long-time resident of Haddonfield, New Jersey, she raised three children, David (Jenny), Sara (Michael), and John. She is survived by three children and their spouses, four grandchildren, Isabel, Julianna, Nicholas, and Caroline, and her husband, Bong S. Lee, M.D. She spent her entire life involved with music and served in the Haddonfield United Methodist Church as an organist, piano accompanist for the youth choir and member of the bell choir. She was also an avid tennis player, golfer and swimmer. She was a member of Green Valley Tennis Club, Wedgewood Swim Club and Tavistock Country Club in Haddonfield. She was a very kind and loving woman who always sought to see the good in others. She will be missed by many friends and family.
Her family will receive friends on Saturday, June 16 at 10 a.m. in the Sanctuary Room at Haddonfield United Methodist Church, 29 Warwick Road, Haddonfield, New Jersey. A memorial celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation is suggested to the “Mi Wha Lee Memorial Organ Fund at Haddonfield United Methodist Church.”
