T-ball to tennis: Harrison plans summer camps

Activities open to township kids and those in South Jersey

Special to The Sun: The Harrison Township Recreation Commission will offer summer camp experiences to residents and other kids in the region that will include a T-ball camp for those ages 3 to 5.

The Harrison Township Recreation Commission will sponsor and host an array of camps this summer, from half-day to dance and theater.

The camps range in length and style and are open to area kids from ages 2 to 12, according to Sharon Chew, recreation coordinator for the township.

“I’ve been the recreation coordinator for the past 15 years, and each year it has gone bigger and bigger,” she said. “We offer our programs, camps and all of our events to not only Harrison residents, but all the surrounding towns, as many do not have a recreation department.”

Dance camps will take place at Ella Harris Park in Mullica Hill in late June. From June 20 to 23, a Barbie-themed beach party will be open to age groups 3 to 5 and 6 to 9, as will a camp built around the film “Encanto” from June 27 to 30.

A two-week theater camp called A Unique Gift will be held from June 27 through July 8 for ages 7 and up. Campers will put on a show also inspired by “Encanto,” with practices to be held at the American Legion Post No. 452 and Clearview Regional High School, where the show will be performed on July 8.

For preschoolers, a July summer camp will embrace the joy of learning on Monday through Thursday during the weeks of July 18 and July 25. Located at William Wilt Soccer Complex, the camp will feature scavenger hunts, water-themed games, S.T.E.M.-centered learning and storytelling.

The recreation commission will sponsor half-day camps for ages 5 and up at Ella Harris Park and the legion post throughout July and August. Starting on July 11 and from Monday through Thursday each week, campers will learn from certified teachers the importance of recycling, art and science.

For incoming kindergarteners and first graders, there will be a school kickoff camp from Aug. 22 through 25 at the William Wilt Soccer Complex. It will prepare kids for the school year and improve their fine motor skills.

There remain summer sports camps open for registration. From soccer and T-ball for ages 3 to 5 to beginner and intermediate tennis for those 6 through 15, the camps will utilize Harrison parks and athletic facilities.
