I read with great interest the letter by Lew Bott concerning the clay mice on the Borough Hall. My dad, Robert P. Shreve was a life long resident of Haddonfield. He was a roofing contractor for about 45 years and most of his work was in Haddonfield. In the early sixties someone at the Haddonfield National Bank discovered pigeons don’t like mice because they eat their eggs. My dad was hired to put grey rubber mice all over the bank roof. It worked great, the pigeons left the bank and went to the Presbyterian Church.
From there they went to the Methodist Church. Dad chased the pigeons up and down the Kings Highway. And yes, he did the borough Hall. I remember him buying the rubber mice by the gross from Woolworths 5 and 10.
The town newspaper at the time was the Haddon Gazette. They did an article complete with pictures. They referred to Dad as the Haddonfield Pied Piper.
Lew, what a great memory you have brought back from the past, thanks.
