County monitors nor’easter across the region

The Camden County Department of Public Works (DPW) is continuing to monitor weather forecasts as a nor’easter threatens holiday travel across the region.

“Camden County crews will be ready to address any hazards on our more than 400 miles of roadways,” said Freeholder Ian Leonard, liaison to the Camden County DPW. “We are clearing inlet tops of debris, checking on flood gates and preparing barricades and cones in case of the need for road closures. Our chippers are fueled and hitched to trucks and chainsaws are fueled and ready,”

The latest forecast obtained by Camden County predicts that the most vulnerable time for our area will be from Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday night. Rainfall of two to four inches is possible over the 12 to 18 hour period. Flooding could be possible on low-lying roadways and in poor drainage areas.

“If flooding occurs in our area, never drive your vehicle into areas where water covers the roadway,” Leonard said. “Flood waters are usually deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the road. Drivers should avoid low-lying areas where flooding is known to occur.”

“If there is an emergency situation, residents should call 911,” Leonard said. “If they want to report flooding on a County road, they should call Public Works at 566–2980.”

If the storm takes out electricity, residents should remember to call an outage in immediately to their utility company so they can identify the location and coordinate crews to restore power.
