This summer, through the Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) Research Scholar Program, Sarah Vetesi of Cherry Hill helped design a research project with her two mentors, Dr. Amy Slenker and Dr. Marcelo Gareca, both infectious disease physicians at LVHN.

The project centered on assessing the level of care patients received when seeking treatment for potential sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The research aimed to “detect patterns and shortfalls” of patient experiences in order “to better improve the quality of care for a patient presenting with acute STI-related signs and symptoms.”

The undertaking involved analyzing 468 patients who presented with STI symptoms from both the Emergency Department and outpatient settings such as clinics. By examining the patient charts for completion and further testing, Vetesi would determine the level of adherence to CDC guidelines followed by the patient care facilities. Long-term, Vetesi hoped to ascertain the policies that need to be established in order to create comprehensive care for STI patients.

“This summer research was an incredibly enjoyable and fulfilling experience, and I am grateful for my incredible mentors who helped me foster a passion for improving patient care as we know it,” Vetesi said. “I am looking forward to pursuing this type of work in the future and throughout the rest of my life.”
