Four South Jersey men have been charged with fraud after allegedly altering checks that had been stolen from the mail, according to U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger.
Tracy Felder-Carter, 23, of Blackwood; Dante Ford, 28, of Pennsauken and Sewell; and Quamell Keyes-Griffin, 21, and Donovan Bunch, 22, both of Sicklerville, were each charged by complaint with one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud. They appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Elizabeth A. Pascal on Aug. 6.
According to documents in the case and statements made in court, Felder-Carter, Ford, Keyes-Griffin and Bunch allegedly stole the checks from the mail, then altered them, increasing their value by several thousand dollars and changing the names of payees to benefit themselves or others they’d recruited. The men then attempted to withdraw funds before the conspiracy was revealed to the banks involved, according to the charges.
The conspiracy involved hundreds of checks at banks across South Jersey and elsewhere. Each count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million.
Investigators in the case included U.S. postal inspectors, the Pennsylvania state police and police in Pennsauken and Springfield Township in Pennsylvania.
