Township creates fair-housing subcommittee

Washington Township council has established a subcommittee to assist the township in complying with its affordable-housing obligations to provide its “fair share” of very low-and moderate-income housing.

The subcommittee – approved through resolution at a meeting on April 24 – will meet periodically to address how to fulfill what’s known as Mount Laurel obligations to affordable housing as the township implements its third-round obligation of 925 units, according to the 2019 Fair Share Housing Settlement Agreement, and begins planning its fourth round.

As part of its duties, the subcommittee will investigate facts and issues; review and discuss draft ordinances, resolutions and other relevant documents; ensure the township is preparing to address the upcoming fourth round, which will begin on July 1, 2025; and discuss issues relevant to the township’s effort to address future affordable housing obligations, according to the resolution.

Subcommittee membership will be made up of two members of the council; a member of the township planning board; the township solicitor; the township administrator; the township’s affordable housing counsel; the township’s affordable housing planner; the township clerk; and the mayor. On occasion, the township’s administrative agent may attend the meetings.

Initial members will be council President Peter Del Borrello; Councilman Donald Brown Jr.; planning board member Daniel Woodington; township Business Administrator Joseph Russo; Solicitor Rob Wright; affordable-housing counsel Erik Nolan and/or Nancy L. Holm; township Planner Joseph Petrongola; and Clerk Christine Ciallella.
