In efforts to educate, the Camden County Board of Commissioners held an event aimed at promoting safe gun storage practices and responsible residents.
Titled “BeSMART for Kids: Safe Storage Saves Lives,” the presentation emphasized the critical importance of responsible gun ownership and how important the role of safe storage is in preventing accidents and tragedies.
The event took place Tuesday, April 2 at the Joint Health Sciences Center in Camden. Attendees included Caryelle Lasher, director of the Camden County Department of Health and Human Services, Health Officer Paschal Nwako, Commissioner Virginia Betteridge, and Dave Austin, the BeSMART lead for the South Jersey Moms Demand Action Local Group.
The primary objective of the presentation was to educate both gun owners and non-gun owners on the significance of normalizing conversations around safe gun storage.
Betteridge, who serves as the liaison to the Department of Health and Human Services, highlighted the vital role of safe gun storage in saving lives.
“Safe gun storage saves lives, and it is an essential element to responsible gun ownership,” she said. “And for those who do not own guns, it is important to know how to talk to others about safe gun storage because your child could enter the home of a friend or relative who do own them. We are starting the conversation here in Camden County, and we could not think of a better time to do so than at the beginning of Public Health Week.”
