In a poignant tribute to sacrifice and dedication, the Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey Chapters of Folds of Honor recently awarded scholarships to families of fallen and disabled service members and first responders.
Through the gift of education, the local nonprofit continued its commitment to support military families, despite the continuing challenges posed by COVID.
Founded in 2007 by Lt. Col Dan Rooney, the organization has awarded more than 51,000 scholarships – totaling more than $240 million – across all 50 states.
This Christmas, Folds of Honor continued its legacy by presenting 25 new scholarship recipients with award letters, thanks to additional donations from the community. Among them was Sicklerville resident Anyah Reid, a student at East Carolina University majoring in forensic psychology who aspires to a career supporting juveniles in the justice system.
Her father, Air Force airman David Reid, served with distinction in the military for seven years, specializing as a Corrosion Control Specialist and Tactical Aircraft Mechanic.
Folds of Honor chapter President Elizabeth Simmons explained the scholarship selection criteria, which emphasize a student’s financial need and a veteran’s disability level.
“The selection process involves stringent criteria, such as a minimum of 70% disability due to military catastrophic injury and an inability to return to work,” she said. “Additionally, all applications undergo evaluation by a national organization, ensuring tailored support based on individual needs.”
Simmons said recipients who get letters then accept their scholarship offers.
“This year’s fundraising efforts enabled 25 additional applicants to receive scholarships, with top priority given to those who have lost a family member,” she noted.
Simmons and Garrett Allen, the nonprofit’s communications specialist, expressed deep affection for the organization, underscoring the immense value of supporting service men and women and their families, especially during the holiday season.
