The Girl Scouts of Central and Southern New Jersey (GSCSNJ) has launched a media team.
Reagan Allison, a fifth grader from St. Mary’s School in Williamston, was one of the first on the team to cover a story. The 10-year-old is in her fifth year as a Girl Scout with Troop 61647.
Allison was “on assignment” at the GSCSNJ Fun Day at Morey’s Pier on Aug. 20, a summer tradition at Morey’s Pier in Wildwood.
Allison shared with the The Sun her experience covering her first story.
1. What and why are you interested in journalism?
I wanted to get involved with the media team because journalists like to tell stories. Journalists get to travel to interesting places and meet new people. Journalists also get to wear great outfits and makeup.
2. How did you like covering the story at Morey’s Pier?
I was nervous at first because this was my first assignment, but I had fun meeting a lot of Girl Scouts. As I interviewed more and got feedback, I felt more confident. I would probably never have a chance to meet them if I had not been interviewing people there.
3. What did you find most interesting?
It was interesting that so many Girl Scouts attended and came from so many different towns. One of the Girl Scouts that I interviewed has attended for the last seven years. It is a family tradition.
4. Did you find anything challenging or difficult?
Morey’s Pier was very noisy; it was a very nice day and there were a lot of people there. The noise from the music, talking, and the wind made it difficult to hear some of their answers. Because we were at a water park, it made it challenging to find Girl Scouts to interview. Then I started looking for Girl Scouting accessories, like hats, towels, and T-shirts. I recognized a towel that was handed out to Girl Scouts in the past.
What do you like most about being part of the Scouts?
I like that we get to do fun things with my friends from school. We have adventures and go to cool places. We have visited Rocking Horse Ranch in New York. When we were there, we rode horses on a trail, went tubing, and got to swim in the pool. We also made crafts, that we call swaps. When we are finished, we get to swap them with other Girl Scouts at the ranch. We also got to swap pins from our Girl Scout vests. This lets us take things home from other Girl Scouts that we met there.
Another fun thing we got to do as a troop is go to Camp Sacajawea (in Farmingdale). When we were there, it was Slime Day, and we got to make all different kinds of Slime.
Anything else that you would like to tell us about your Girl Scouting experience?
We get to do community service. We have made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless. We filled backpacks with school supplies and went grocery shopping for a local food bank. Being a Girl Scout lets us get involved in more programs like this and work together.
