Line dancing at Deptford Recreation Center provides activities for all

Parks and rec hosts classes through end of summer

As part of its senior and wellness activities program, the Deptford Parks and Recreation Department is hosting line-dancing classes at the rec center on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The sessions began last week and will continue through summer, ending on Wednesday, Aug. 30.

Tuesday classes are for beginners and will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. More experienced line dancers will have classes on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. There is no registration, but classes are $3 to pay the instructor, Barbara Eckert.

“The classes are a great way to meet new people, make new friends and to get some good exercise,” said Mayor Paul Medany. “It’s a mixture of pure fun and physical activity and for getting to meet new folks. All three are really important to living a happy and healthy lifestyle. It is for novices and more experienced people alike.”

The main demographic for line dancing is seniors, according to Medany, so classes are hosted early in the day and the cost is low.

“These seniors are on a fixed income,” the mayor noted. “So, we try to keep this and our other events free or with a small fee.”

But the line-dancing classes are open to any age. Other township activities include free Tai Chi classes, chair yoga for seniors and the popular pickleball.

Line dancing is a form of group dancing in which participants perform a series of different moves, depending on the song. It encompasses multiple genres of music, including the Macarena, the Electric Slide and the Cupid Shuffle, to name a few.

“Giving back to the community is our ultimate goal,” said Medany.
