Harrison summer camps focus on alphabet and other skills

Registration is now open for the Harrison Township Recreation Commission’s preschool camps, programming that uses activities to help kids understand numbers and the alphabet and improve fine motor skills.

We added our preschool camps in 2013 and they are a fabulous addition for parents,” said Recreation Coordinator Sharon Chew. “Preschool camps – along with both the Kick Off Kindergarten and Jump Start first grade – are held inside and outside the club house at William Wilt soccer complex.

The preschool camp instructor is Jeanne Woerner, a Mantua resident who has been a teacher for more than 16 years. All camp instructors are certified teachers in Harrison or the surrounding area.

Parents can sign up their kids for one of four classes, two during the week of July 24 and two the following week.

Sessions for July 24 through 27 will focus on ocean creatures by featuring hands-on activities to emphasize basic learning skills, and the alphabet, with campers learning through songs, stories and other means. The two sessions each day will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Classes for July 31 through Aug. 3 will focus on activities involving cats and gardening, with the aforementioned times.

Each class has a maximum capacity of 20, with registration deadline the week before, or until all slots are filled. The cost for each is $45 until April 30, after which the price goes to $50. The recreation commission will also ask parents to remain with their children for each class.

“It is a great socialization time for parents and children to meet others in the area,” said Chew.  “Parents form new friendships and schedule play dates for their little ones. These children grow together moving up into the older age camps, and most begin elementary school together.”
