The mellow and resonant sounds of the marimba will fill the Harrison Township Historical Society’s Richwood Academy Cultural Center, when Rowan University’s noted Percussion Ensemble performs on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2022, 3 p.m.
Under the direction of Dr. Fabio Oliveira, the Ensemble will present a diverse salon concert featuring a variety of genres and musical styles.
Dr. Oliveira is the Head of Percussion at Rowan University’s College of Performing Arts and is both an educator and performer. Earlier this year he presented an exciting program focusing on Brazilian samba that rocked the historic academy. The upcoming program promises to be equally enjoyable and engaging.
Originating in Africa, the instrument consists of wooden bars that are struck with mallets of various types. The bars are connected with resonator pipes that amplify certain harmonics of the sound. Introduced into the Americas by enslaved Africans, marimbas became widespread throughout the New World.
Recognizing its versatility, both classical and popular composers have written work for the instrument. The Ensemble will be performing an eclectic program of classical, popular, folk and contemporary music.
The Percussion Ensemble’s program is part of the Cultural Center’s roster of lectures and performances this Fall. Future programs include a discussion of climate change and its effects here in South Jersey, and performances by Rowan University’s Opera Company, and a recital byRowan’s Head of Strings, Timothy Schwarz.
