As families navigate the teenage years, both parents and children may feel as if they have been thrust into uncharted territory. Parents of children developmental disabilities or other special needs face unique challenges as their kids make way from childhood to adulthood. The teen years are an especially important time as these families also must consider what kind of adult life their child might like for themselves. There are countless choices to make, and many parents simply do not know where to begin.
On Wednesday, April 6 at 7 p.m., Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS) will host a free community workshop entitled Navigating the Disability Continuum: The Transition Years, which will address the pivotal time between ages 14 and 21. Participants can learn how to access agencies, programs, and services to help their child transition from adolescence to adulthood, including: transition and the IEP (Individualized Education Program); adult programs and services of the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD); the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (DVRS) and the workplace; support coordination agencies; and community-based resources.
JFCS will host a follow-up workshop addressing the adult years (ages 21 and older) on Thursday, June 2. Both workshops are free and open to the community. To register visit https://jfcssnj.org/continuum.
