Rowan University announces first N.J. school of veterinary medicine

The new school will be housed on the campus of Rowan College of South Jersey.

Rowan University is establishing the first school of veterinary medicine in New Jersey.

The Rowan University School of Veterinary Medicine will be housed on the campus of Rowan College of South Jersey (RCSJ), the first in the country.

The Rowan University School of Veterinary Medicine will offer New Jersey’s first Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, as well as additional degrees and training programs designed to shape the future of veterinary medicine and animal health care in the state.

“Gloucester County continues to break the mold of traditionalism,” Director Robert M. Damminger said. “The Board of Commissioners is extremely proud of the work our educational partners do to offer some of the best education and schools in southern New Jersey.”

The project would not have been possible without the advocating from Senate President Steve Sweeney, who secured $75 million in funding to construct the school’s primary academic and clinical facility in Sewell.

“Southern New Jersey has been improving the quality of medical education and research over the last decade,” said Senate President Steve Sweeney. “With national demand for veterinarians combined with Gloucester County’s farming industry it was a no-brainer that Rowan University would be the home of New Jersey’s first veterinary school.”

At the event on Wednesday, Senate President Sweeney noted that New Jersey will be able to retain our best and brightest students while attracting aspiring veterinarians from other states to study here as well.

Rowan will establish undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and internship/residency programs at the veterinary school. Additionally, an A.S. in veterinary technology to B.S. in veterinary technology pathway program will be offered in collaboration with Rowan College of South Jersey-Gloucester.

“We believe the partnership between the County, Rowan University and Rowan College of South Jersey creates a unique opportunity for students. We continue to create ways for our students to excel in future career paths thanks to the growing landscape of the county all while keeping education affordable,” said Commissioner Lyman Barnes, Liaison to Education.

With the addition of the new school, Rowan will become one of two universities in the nation to offer Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degrees. The University offers its MD program through Cooper Medical School of Rowan University and its DO program through Rowan School of Osteopathic Medicine.
