The following is a release from the Gloucester Township Police Department.
On Monday, Nov. 1 at approximately 12:41 a.m., the Gloucester Township Police Department responded to Oakmont Rd. in the Blackwood section of Gloucester Township for a reported house fire. Arriving officers found heavy smoke coming from the residence. Officers assisted residents safely from the residence, as well as evacuated any immediate neighbors.
The fire was quickly extinguished, and contained to the original fire residence by Gloucester Township Fire Department Stations 81, 83, 84, 86, and 88 along with units from Pine Hill and Runnemede Fire Departments.
The four occupants of the home were not injured, but (2) cats were found deceased by firefighters. The residents were displaced and were provided lodging with assistance by the American Red Cross.
While this incident does not appear to be suspicious at this time, it is being investigated by the Gloucester Township Police Department Investigations Bureau, Gloucester Township Fire Department Station 84, and the Camden County Fire Marshal.
This is a reminder to check your fire suppression systems and alert / audible alarm systems to ensure they are operational. Smoke alarms are a key part of any fire escape plan.
